information

Soma, known generically as carisoprodol, is a muscle relaxant that blocks pain signals sent between nerves and the brain. It also can relieve muscle spasms.

Soma is usually prescribed for acute injuries, such as muscle strains, or for severe musculoskeletal conditions. It should only be used short-term in combination with other regimens prescribed by your doctor, such as rest and physical therapy.

Those with the blood condition porphyria should not take Soma. Tell your doctor your full medical history, particularly if you have liver or kidney disease, asthma, a seizure disorder, ulcers, a blood-clotting or other bleeding disorder, or a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Also mention any allergies to carisoprodol, tybamate, meprobate or mebutamate.

Soma can be taken with food or without. Follow your doctor's instructions precisely regarding how often to take Soma and when to reduce the dose. Don't take more than has been prescribed, and don't stop taking it suddenly without your doctor's instructions.

Soma can be addicting. Only use it for the condition for which it was prescribed, and follow your doctor's instructions carefully. If your pain is not relieved with Soma, don't take more; instead, consult your doctor for further instructions. Discontinuing Soma may cause withdrawal symptoms. Consult your doctor for the best way to stop taking this medication.

Soma may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use caution when operating any type of machinery until you know how the drug will affect you. Alcohol can increase these effects and should be avoided while taking Soma.

Soma is not recommended for use by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.

A missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In rare cases, a severe, serious reaction may occur shortly after taking the first dose. Seek medical care immediately if you suffer extreme weakness, an inability to move your arms or legs, shakiness or unsteady movements, confusion, double vision, speech problems, temporary vision loss or extreme agitation.

Seek help immediately if you experience allergy symptoms such as difficulty breathing, rash, or swelling of the face, tongue or throat.

Less severe side effects may include headache, dizziness, hiccups, insomnia, nausea and vomiting.

Soma should be kept at room temperature, away from moisture, heat and light. Do not share this medication.
